I found some cool photos of David Grisman’s Loar on the Mandolin Archive. I’m not sure if these are new or not, but I think they are new to the archive at least. Last time I saw Dawg play I think he just had electrical tape over the logo. Since then it looks like he found a little dog to put over that, which is pretty cool, I guess? The custom truss rod is a nice touch too. Overall these are great shots of a great mandolin, signed and dated by Lloyd Loar December 20, 1922.
From the mandolin cafe, I can’t wait to hear this one.
Sugar Hill has announced an October 20 release for the new Sam Bush recording Circles Around Me, a mix of bluegrass and newgrass.
Supporting musicians include guest appearances by Del McCoury, Jerry Douglas, Edgar Meyer, and New Grass Revival co-founder Courtney Johnson, the latter reunited as the result of a previously unreleased recording with Bush and Johnson’s fiddle and banjo recording of “Apple Blossom” from 1976. Sam’s superb touring group including Scott Vestal on banjo, Stephen Mougin on guitar, Byron House on bass, and Chris Brown on percussion round out the ensemble.
Selections are a mix of new versions of previously released recordings and original compositions including a Monroe-like waltz entitled Old North Woods.
